"WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?" is the title of an inquiry class and Saint Philip's Church  will have such a session each Sunday at 10:00 a.m., in the Library.  Any one interested in learning more about the Catholic faith; strengthening their childhood instruction; keeping up with their children's religion class or just desiring to learn about Catholicism is welcomed.  The team leaders are John Tierney and Dolores Steinhilber.

LECTIONARY PREVIEW offers you an opportunity to preview the Scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday.  The adult group meets on Thursday morning at 9:30 am in the Rectory meeting room.

COMMUNITY SUNDAY: The third Sunday of each month is designated as Community Sunday.  This is an opportunity for fellowship with other parishioners and strengthens our Faith Community in its social aspect.

MARRIED COUPLES RETREAT:  Retreats will be held on selected weekends at Priestfield Retreat Center, West Virginia.  For information, please call John and Emily Tierney (301 423-5546).

TEENS IN HIS IMAGE (TIHI): Keep your eyes and ears out for teen events.   If you are interested in receiving teen updates via email, send us an email with your name to StPhilipTIHI@comcast.net.

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month, September through June, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Rectory.  You do not have to attend all the meetings.  You may pick out the books you are interested in and come on the night that we will discuss that book.  We would like that anyone who comes to the meeting will have read the book to be discussed.  However, if you don't have time to read the book selected for a specific month, just come to listen or share.  All books can be found on Amazon.com or in any bookstore.  All welcome!  For information, call Mary McHale, 301-735-3451 (or by e-mail: muddmm@aol.com).

St. Philip’s Book Club: Titles for Feb. – Sept. 2009

February:  The Shack, by William P. Young.         ...one wintry day, he receives a note in his mailbox inviting him back to the woods...  The note, it would seem, is from God.

March:  Big Russ & Me: Father and Son: Lessons of Life, by Tim Russert.          ...casts a fond look back to the 1950s Buffalo neighborhood of Russert’s youth and recalls the extraordinary example of his father—a WWII vet who worked two jobs without complaint for thirty years and taught his children to appreciate the values of self-discipline, of respect, of loyalty to friends...

April:  The Year of Magical Thinking, by Joan Didion.            ...A stunning book of electric honesty and passion...  explores an intensely personal yet universal experience: a portrait of a marriage—and a life, in good times and bad—that will speak to everyone...

May:  Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time, by Greg Mortensonn.            ...biography of American Greg Mortenson, who has devoted his life to building schools in the remotest mountains of Pakistan. ...  Recommended for readers who enjoy heartfelt and inspiring stories of unusual achievement by heroically generous individuals.

June:  When in Rome, by Robert Hutchinson.            ...Have you ever wondered just what goes on "behind the scenes" in Vatican City? Well, wonder no longer!  When in Rome reveals many innermost and often-hidden secrets buried deep in the depths of the Vatican's cellars.  It's an absolutely superb book.

(The Club does not meet in July and August.)September:  Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love, by Dava Sobel.                    ...Did you know the famous scientist Galileo had an  illegitimate daughter who was a nun,  Sister Maria Celeste?  She was a woman of exquisite mind and singular goodness...  Sobel breathes life into Galileo, his daughter, and the earth-centered world...

THE LIGUORI SOCIETY: An association of faithful young men of high school and college age for the purpose of prayer, work for and discernment of priestly vocations.  Everyone is either called to a priestly vocation or knows someone who is.  Young men are ideally situated for this apostolate and the Ligouri Society, named for the patron of priestly vocations, positions them to pursue this important work for Christ in a better way.  Prospective members must be at least of high school age, currently attending Sunday Mass and otherwise seeking to live the precepts of the Church, and willing to pray for and encourage vocations to the priesthood while discerning their own call whatever it might be.  Interested individuals must make their request to enter through current members who can be  identified by their attire of suit and tie at Sunday Masses and cassock and surplice while serving Mass.  For information email fathercusick@comcast.net or leave a phone message at the office which will be forwarded to Fr Cusick.   For more information at their web page go to:
